I Discovery of Noble Gases
In 1892, Raleigh found the density of nitrogen, which was obtained from air to be 0.5% more than the density of nitrogen obtained by heating a mixture of sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride.
NaNO2 + NH4CI =N2 + 2H2O + NaCI
It showed that some heavier gas present in air, was mixed with nitrogen.
2 Discovery of Argon
In 1894, Raleigh and Ramsay succeeded in separating a new gas from air and named it Argon. During the next ten years, five more gases resembling Argon were discovered.
These were helium, neon, krypton, xenon and radon.
Noble Gases
Helium, neon, krypton, xenon and radon were called inert gases because they did not react with any other substance and had not shown any chemical property. None of their compounds were prepared. Hence they were called, Inert Cases. Some compounds of xenon were prepared in 1962. Hence the name, inert gases was changed to noble gases.
NOTE
Four of these gases Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe were obtained by careful fractional distillation of liquid air. These were called Rare Gases because they were present in very small amounts
in air.
