The valency position in the periodic table is:
Valencies of elements present in the first groups were equal to their group number. For example, valencies of Na, Mg, Al and Si were 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively.
Elements of 5th and 6th groups have two types of valencies, one of them being equal to their number and the other being the difference of group number from eight.
Example
Phosphorus, belongs to group V. It forms two chlorides,
i) PCI5 (valency equal to the group number) and
ii) PCI3 (valency equal to 8 minus group number).
